Wording to use when completing disability forms

Our second meeting was held on Saturday 26th September 2009.

One of our speakers Tony Nicholas  works within social services and was able to offer advice concerning the correct terminology to use when completing disability assessment forms. The purpose of these forms is to assess the level of assistance required by both carers and those they are caring for. Many questions in these forms are subjective and therefore it easy to under state your case by just using the wrong terminology or miss understanding the purpose behind the question.

Tony is a carer himself caring for his wife Sian. Therefore he was also able to pass on many useful hints and tips.

We were amazed at what is available for carers themselves.  For example:

Carers are eligible for discounted access to  local authority sporting facilities at discount rates.

Free entry into cinemas and theatres if they are accompanying those for whom the care.

Such offers are provided as encouragement and acknowledgement of the hard work provided by those who care for others.

Tony urged carers to take time out for themselves in order that they remain fresh enough to sustain the care they offer. If you allow yourself to become run down you who will care for your loved one then?

It is imperative that you have a hobby away from the one you care for so that you recharge your batteries – we all need time out.

A number of practical questions were asked of Tony concerning the filling in of forms and of course discussion went beyond our finishing time.

Tony also spoke of the support he finds in God’s care.

“Cast all your anxieties on God because He cares for you.”
